When head coach and owner, Anthony Dovidio, started his Brazilian Jiu Jitsu journey he trained in Colorado and was greatly influenced by Professor Chad Robichaux, a 4th degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt now under Carlson Gracie Jr. Professor Chad Robichaux is a Former Force Recon Marine, a Pro MMA Champion, and the Founder of Mighty Oaks Foundation. When Professor Chad moved from Colorado, Coach Anthony and Amy Dovidio took over Gracie Barra Westcliffe and ran it until moving to Pensylvania in 2015. After living in PA for a few years Coach Anthony and Amy Dovidio moved to Northwest Kansas to be close to Coach Amy's family in Goodland, KS. Coach Anthony was then asked by several friends to start a jiu jitsu class in Goodland and just like that Goodland BJJ was born. A few months after Goodland BJJ had started, Professor Scott Miller reached out to Coach Anthony and Coach Amy to teach a seminar. Scott became the Professor of both schools shortly thereafter.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a self-defense and combat sport/ martial art based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. BJJ focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokehold.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very different from many other martial arts. Unlike other martial arts like Karate and Tae Kwon Do, BJJ’s main focus is on grappling and ground fighting. However, surprisingly to many, BJJ has emerged as the elite martial art that has dominated the world of MMA.
In contrast to other Martial Arts that only teach stand up techniques, BJJ teaches how to compete and control your opponent from being on your feet to defeating them on the ground. With statistics showing 90% of fights going to the ground it is obvious that the one that has the best ground skills is going to have a serious advantage. For those that wonder how this affects it’s use as an efficient form of self-defense it is important to remember where it came from. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was specifically developed as a formidable form of self-defense in one of the toughest and most dangerous cities in the world. If it succeeded in becoming the most effect form of self-defense in Rio de Janeiro, you can bet it can help you out when you need it.
As opposed to martial arts like Karate that rely on power and hard strikes to do damage to an opponent, BJJ can be easily used by anyone of any size against a larger and stronger opponent. Jiu-Jitsu focuses on technique and strategy instead of brute strength. It certainly takes a lot more effort and energy to beat down a large opponent than to choke one out or submit them using a joint lock. This makes BJJ a great martial art for men, women, teens and kids alike.
The Brazilian jiu-jitsu Gi is a uniform for training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, adapted from the keikogi used in modern Japanese martial arts. A Gi, meaning dress or clothes, is typically composed of a heavy cotton jacket, reinforced drawstring trousers, and a belt which communicates rank.
You can order a gi from us or purchase one online. Most of our students buy on Amazon and most gis will come with a white belt which is the starting belt.
Please make sure to wash your gi before every class and hang dry to prevent shrinking.
